This morning's one thing

CPI at 08:30 ET hits a split board: Nasdaq pinned below last week's low, S&P coiled near its weekly open, gold sliding, crude pressing fresh highs.

The Lines in the Sand

30,892Overnight rejection high; reclaimed, it breaks the bears' grip.
30,792Last week's low, broken and now overhead.
30,705.75Overnight floor; a break hands the bears fresh fuel.

The Trap

Big tech closed green, and that tempts dip-chasers to fight a tape still stuck under last week's low. If a CPI spike fades back below 30792, the early longs are the ones left offside.

The Read

Bears took last week's floor at 30792, and the week closed under it at 30781.25. Bulls fought back hard off the 30591.25 flush, but the bounce died well short of 30905.5 and the day still closed red. The counter-argument is real: most Nasdaq heavyweights closed higher, and morning CPI can spark a relief rip. Below 30815 the trap door to 30690.5 and 30591.25 stays open; hourly closes back above 30905.5 put the bears offside.

Morning review · Oct 14, 7:31 AM EDT

Bears took last week's low at 30792 and kept price under it, but the tech heavyweights closed higher on October 13. That split is the fight. Price got rejected at 30891.5 overnight and slid back to 30757.25, still perched just above the daily EMA21 at 30726.08, so the bears have only a slight edge. Lose 30705.75 and the floor gives way; reclaim 30892 and the bearish case loses its grip.

Overnight evidence · 9 cited findings

Overnight price action

  • From the evening baseline, MNQ traded from 30794.5 to 30891.5, then fell to 30705.75 and closed the 06:00 ET bar at 30757.25.
  • The overnight net change was -37.25 points across a 185.75-point range, or 42.1% of ADR.
  • Price crossed and closed through the prior 30792 thesis invalidation while remaining above the 30705.75 overnight low.
  • The prior expected rebound toward 30820 occurred and was exceeded, but the projected 30685 level had not been reached by the observation cutoff.

Overnight events

  • The CPI release remained pending at the 07:31 ET engine cutoff, and precise consensus estimates were not uniformly corroborated.

What changed

  • Accepted weekly downside and the failed 30891.5 rebound preserve the evening bearish read.
  • Gap completion removes the small 30781.25 gap as an unresolved objective.
  • Remaining ADR capacity and H1 compression support expansion risk below 30705.75.
  • Positive QQQ constituent breadth and CPI event risk reduce confidence but do not alter direction.

Index drivers

NVDA, MSFT, AAPL, META, AVGO and GOOGL all closed higher on October 13, with META posting the biggest gain of the group, while AMZN and TSLA finished lower. Earnings start landing next week: TSLA on October 20 and META on October 21, both after the close, then GOOGL on October 27 after the close and MSFT on October 28.

Evidence · 9 cited findings

Price action · weekly / daily / H1

  • Weekly price accepted below the prior-week low at 30792 and closed at 30781.25, 363.25 points below the 31144.5 weekly open; that acceptance owns the bearish direction.
  • The daily candle recovered from 30591.25 but still closed bearish at 30781.25; it held 55.17 points above the 30726.08 daily EMA21 while failing to recover 30905.5.
  • H1 stabilized around its EMA21 after the selloff, creating bounce risk, but failure below 30815 leaves 30690.5 and 30591.25 exposed; sustained closes above 30905.5 invalidate the immediate bearish scenario.

Metrics

  • The completed daily range was 314.25 points, 71.3% of the 441.03-point ADR, leaving room for another directional session without requiring an exceptional range.
  • Daily volume was 1.497 times its 30-session average, strengthening the significance of the bearish close and failed recovery.
  • The last H1 range was only 43.5 points versus a 105-point expansion threshold, so compression precedes the projected 09:00-11:00 ET next session.

Sentiment & current events

  • Large QQQ drivers were mixed-to-positive after the close: NVDA gained 0.9721%, MSFT 0.425%, AAPL 0.088%, META 2.63% and AVGO 0.7273%, while AMZN lost 0.366% and TSLA lost 0.7407%; this breadth is the strongest contradiction to the bearish futures structure: https://www.invesco.com/qqq-etf/en/about.html

7,874.5Overnight lid; acceptance above it opens the door higher.
7,848.75Overnight floor; losing it drains the upside tilt.
7,897.5Last week's high, the roof over this whole range.

The Trap

Hourly ranges have stayed compressed for 63 bars, so the first CPI pop through 7874.5 looks like a breakout and pulls in the late crowd. If price can't hold above it, those late longs end up offside as soon as it slips back inside the range.

The Read

Neither side gained ground today: the session opened at 7856.25 and closed at 7855.5, a doji on heavier-than-normal volume. That was a real fight, not a nap, boxed between 7834.25 and 7864 and still inside last week's 7760-7897.5 range. The heavyweights leaned positive and price sits above the daily average near 7800.42, but CPI can blow straight through a range this tight. Accept above 7864 and the door opens to 7887; lose 7834.25 and 7815-7800 is the next shelf.

Morning review · Oct 14, 7:31 AM EDT

Bulls have nudged price up to 7868.5 but still haven't cleared the overnight lid at 7874.5, and the prior session's doji says the bears haven't left. The whole week is trading inside last week's 7760-7897.5 box. Hourly ranges have been compressed for 63 bars, so this market is coiled, not broken out, and CPI at 08:30 ET is the spark. Hold above 7874.5 and the door opens toward 7887-7897.5; lose 7848.75 and the upside tilt is gone.

Overnight evidence · 9 cited findings

Overnight price action

  • From the evening baseline, MES traded as low as 7848.75 and as high as 7874.5 before closing the 06:00 ET bar at 7868.5.
  • The overnight net change was +12 points across a 25.75-point range, or 34.7% of ADR.
  • Price exceeded the prior expected 03:00 projection of 7859 and approached the prior candle's projected 7871 high.
  • The overnight advance remained inside the prior-week range and stopped short of confirmed acceptance above 7874.5.

Overnight events

  • The CPI release remained pending at the engine cutoff, and precise consensus estimates were not uniformly corroborated.

What changed

  • Improved daily and H1 price action adjusts the evening flat read to bullish.
  • The large daily EMA21 cushion and mostly positive large-cap performance support the adjustment.
  • Inside-range weekly structure and failure to accept above 7874.5 limit conviction.
  • CPI and prolonged compression create material two-sided expansion risk.

Price action · weekly / daily / H1

  • Weekly price is mildly bearish below the 7872.5 open but remains inside the prior-week 7760-7897.5 range, with neither boundary taken; balance owns the flat direction.
  • The daily candle was a near-perfect doji, opening 7856.25 and closing 7855.5, while holding 55.08 points above the 7800.42 daily EMA21.
  • Late H1 closes recovered above the H1 EMA21, but price remains trapped between 7834.25 support and 7864 resistance; 7887 is exposed above a breakout, while loss of 7834.25 opens 7815-7800.

Metrics

  • The completed daily range was 29.75 points, only 40% of the 74.3-point ADR, consistent with compression but leaving substantial event-driven range capacity.
  • The daily body was only 0.75 point and 1% of ADR while volume ran at 1.306 times its 30-session average, confirming active two-sided trade rather than directional control.
  • The final H1 range was 5.75 points versus an 18.5-point expansion threshold, and 50 bars have passed since the last qualifying expansion.

The Read

Gold bulls ran last week's high at 4233.5, couldn't hold it, and got shoved back under the 4221 weekly open. The hourly chart has stair-stepped lower from 4224.8 to 4169.7, and the late bounce stalled under its average near 4193.5. The tell for the other side is strong: ETF holdings just hit a record while speculative longs shrank, and volume on the drop was light. Reclaim 4205 and the bears are offside; lose 4169.7 and 4148-4135 is exposed.

Morning review · Oct 14, 7:31 AM EDT

Bulls pushed above last week's high at 4233.5 but couldn't hold it, and bears have controlled the tape since. Price slid from 4184 to 4163.6, well below the 4246.58 daily EMA21, and hourly bars keep making lower highs and lower lows. The counterweight is real: World Gold Council data shows steady ETF and central-bank demand, and CPI at 08:30 ET can jolt the dollar and yields either way. A close under 4160.8 opens the way to 4145-4135; a recovery above 4193.3 stalls the slide.

Overnight evidence · 9 cited findings

Overnight price action

  • From the evening baseline, MGC traded up to 4193.3 before falling to 4160.8 and closing the 06:00 ET bar at 4163.6.
  • The overnight net change was -20.4 points across a 32.5-point range, or 35.1% of ADR.
  • Price moved below the prior 4169.7 expansion trigger and reached the prior expected 09:30 region ahead of schedule.
  • The prior projected rebound toward 4197 fell short, and price remained below the immediate 4193.3 recovery threshold.

Overnight events

  • The CPI release remained pending at the engine cutoff, and no current primary real-yield reading was available.

What changed

  • Failed weekly breakout, daily EMA rejection and lower H1 structure preserve the bearish evening read.
  • The prior 4169.7 downside trigger failed overnight, strengthening immediate continuation risk.
  • Remaining ADR capacity and H1 compression support a possible move below 4160.8.
  • Structural gold demand and CPI event risk materially oppose an extended bearish path.

Price action · weekly / daily / H1

  • Weekly price swept the prior-week high at 4233.5 without accepting above it, then reversed below the 4221 weekly open to close at 4184.2; the failed breakout owns the bearish direction.
  • The daily candle closed bearish at 4184.2, 62.38 points below the 4246.58 daily EMA21 after rejection, and finished in the lower portion of its 4169.7-4224.8 range.
  • H1 structure declined through successive lower highs and lows from 4224.8 to 4169.7; the late bounce stayed below the H1 EMA21 near 4193.5, leaving 4169.7 and 4148-4135 exposed unless 4205 is reclaimed.

Metrics

  • The completed daily range was 55.1 points, 59.6% of the 92.47-point ADR, leaving capacity for continuation.
  • Daily volume was only 0.747 times its 30-session average, limiting confirmation despite the EMA rejection.
  • The last H1 range was 6.6 points against a 23.9-point expansion threshold, with 61 bars since the last qualifying expansion; compression supports a larger CPI-window move but not its direction by itself.

The Lines in the Sand

95.5Fresh weekly high; above it, the bulls keep the wheel.
94.4Hourly EMA21; closes below it cool the run.
93.2Last week's high, broken and now the floor bulls defend.

The Trap

Shorts betting the move was stretched have been run over all week as price kept making new highs. The flip side is that Gulf headlines can cut both ways, and news of recovering supply can pull the rug from under late longs fast.

The Read

Crude bulls broke last week's ceiling at 93.2, held above it, and closed at 94.77, just under the 95.1 weekly high. The hourly trend is still climbing above its rising average, and unresolved Hormuz headlines are the fuel. The counter-argument: the day already burned most of its normal range on only average volume, and no verified inventory data backs the move. Hold 94.17-93.90 and a push through 95.1 opens fresh ground; an hourly close under 93.90 means a deeper pullback.

Morning review · Oct 14, 7:31 AM EDT

Bears have been offside all week. Crude took last week's high at 93.2, held above it, and climbed to a fresh 95.50 high before the hour closed at 95.41. Gulf shipping and infrastructure disruption is the fuel, recovering supply is the counterweight, and there's no fresh EIA inventory data until October 15. Hold above 95.50 and the door stays open; closes below 94.40 cool the run and open the way to a deeper pullback.

Overnight evidence · 10 cited findings

Overnight price action

  • From the evening baseline, MCL initially pulled back to 93.99 before rallying to 95.50 and closing the 06:00 ET bar at 95.41.
  • The overnight net change was +0.58 across a 1.51-point range, or 36.5% of ADR.
  • The prior projected pullback toward 94.30 occurred and extended modestly lower, after which price exceeded the prior 95.25 morning projection ahead of schedule.
  • Price remained well above the prior 93.90 session-flip level throughout the completed overnight record.

Overnight events

  • No EIA petroleum report is scheduled inside the forecast window; the official release is October 15 at 12:00 ET: https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/supply/weekly/schedule.php
  • CPI remained pending at the engine cutoff and its directional transmission to crude was unknown.

What changed

  • Accepted weekly breakout and renewed H1 momentum preserve the bullish evening read.
  • The overnight pullback held above the prior flip level before price advanced to a new weekly high.
  • Remaining ADR capacity supports another expansion attempt above 95.50.
  • Recovering supply and missing current physical-market evidence limit confidence despite geopolitical upside asymmetry.

Price action · weekly / daily / H1

  • Weekly price took and accepted above the prior-week high at 93.2, trades 2.94 above the 91.83 weekly open and closed near the 95.1 weekly high; that acceptance owns the bullish direction.
  • The daily candle advanced from 93.2 to 94.77 and closed 3.27 above the 91.5 daily EMA21 after using 82.5% of ADR; control is bullish, although the large used range raises pullback risk.
  • H1 price advanced from 91.69 to 95.1 and remains above its rising EMA21; holding 94.17-93.90 supports continuation through 95.1, while an H1 close below 93.90 signals a deeper retracement.

Metrics

  • The completed daily range was 3.41 points, 82.5% of the 4.13-point ADR, showing strong participation while warning that immediate extension may require consolidation.
  • Daily volume was 0.995 times its 30-session average, indicating the bullish move occurred on typical rather than exceptional participation.
  • The final H1 range was 0.47 against a 0.82 expansion threshold, with seven bars since the last expansion; a close above 95.1 is the defined trigger for the 08:00-11:00 ET window.
